BIDDEFORD, Maine – Suffolk men's soccer's Miguel Varela took home Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Week honors after a one-goal, one-assist in a 2-0-0 week for the Rams, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Additionally, the Milton, Massachusetts, product is the first Suffolk player to be tabbed a conference's best rookie over a seven-day stretch since Sunjoon Tenorio three-peated as the GNAC's Rookie of the Week Oct. 14, 2019. Varela is the second Suffolk player to be recognized by the CCC this season. He joins Nigel Leo, who took home CCC Player of the Week Sept. 8.

The freshman midfielder opened the week with an equalizing goal at Framingham State that aided in the eventual Boston Rams 2-1 win in Eastie. Three days later, he kicked in an assist on the lone goal of a 1-0 decision over Gordon, which helped Suffolk lift the lid on its CCC calendar victorious. The set-up was the first of his collegiate career.

Through seven games this year, Varela has proven to be a consistent contributor offensively with nine points, good for second on the squad. His stat line is broken down into four goals, which also sit second on the team, and one assist.

Varela and the Rams have the midweek to rest and prepare for its Saturday, Sept. 25 showdown with Salve Regina. First kick at East Boston Memorial Park's James A. Sartori Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
