Men’s Soccer Falls in Beantown Road Battle at Emmanuel, 4-3

BOSTON – Blocks away from Suffolk University's College Series at Fenway Park where the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays were in a pitcher's duel, men's soccer and Emmanuel had an offensive outburst at Clemente Field Wednesday night. The Rams fell on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision to slip in its road debut in the Bill Maddock era.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | Emmanuel 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-2-0) | Emmanuel (2-1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a scoring frenzy from the get go with five goals on the board in the first 20 minutes.

The Saints were the first to strike and did so with 6:44 removed from the clock with the Rams' response coming 51 seconds later. Brady Sorensen scored on a set-up from Edward Abouzeid to level the playing field at 1-all.

Less than two minutes later, Abouzeid had his second assist of the day as he fed Nigel Leo for the go-ahead goal. The tied game did not last long as Emmanuel evened the playing field 4:11 later and went ahead, 3-2, within the 20th minute.

That ended the scoring for the first frame, but not for the night as the Saints found the back of the net within the first 1:21 out of the intermission to take a two-goal, 4-2, advantage.

Suffolk had to play catchup and Abouzeid continued to deal assists as the freshman aided in Erik Van Even's goal at the 52nd minute that trimmed the deficit down to one.

That would be all the ground the Rams made up however as Vincent Conelli turned aside the next two blue-and-gold attempts on target the rest of the way to secure the victory for the host.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Xander Balog picked up a pair of saves in the setback.
  • Conelli registered five stops in the victory.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Abouzeid assisted on all three of Suffolk's scores.
  • Leo, Sorensen and Van Even each found the back of the net once.
  • Suffolk out the Saints, 15-11, and put more attempts on target, 8-6.
  • The Rams and Emmanuel each had six corner kick opportunities.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The three-assist performance is a career-high for Abouzeid.
  • Abouzeid's three-assist night is the most assists for a player in blue-and-gold since Jarrett Davis tallied four in a 7-0 shutout of Anna Maria Oct. 15, 2016.
  • Sorensen and Van Even have both scored in back-to-back battles.
  • Leo has notched at least one point in all four of the Rams' game this year and has netted the rock in the last three. In the four-game stretch, the graduate transfer has registered nine points on four goals and one helper.
