Men’s Soccer Lights Up Lasell, 3-0

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk men's soccer wrapped up its 2021 opening week with a return to the win column in shutout fashion as the Rams blanked Lasell, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at James A. Sartori Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It took 20 minutes of action before either team lit the lamp. Nigel Leo struck first with help from Taj Jensen

Less than three minutes later, Brady Sorenson found the back corner of the net for the first time off a feed from Edward Abouzeid on the right sideline. 

Sorensen cruised down the sideline and Erik Van Even kept pace with him to easily put away the centering feed to push the cushion to three in the 84th minute. 

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Alfredo Serrano Figueroa secured the shutout with a one-save effort. 
  • Zack Laware played the first half in net, while Gabriel Bazikas defended between the pipes for the second set for 45 minutes. Each Lasell netminder had three saves to their credit. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Sorensen finished the day with three points on one goal and one assist. 
  • Leo and Van Even each registered one goal. 
  • Abouzeid and Jensen both had one helper. 
  • Suffolk outshot Lasell, 21-5, with a 9-1 advantage in shots on target. 
  • The Rams had six corner chances compared to the Lasers two.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk began the year 2-1 for the first time since 2017. 
  • The Rams defeated the Lasers for the first time since Sept. 15, 2018 to move to 5-8-4. 
  • The shutout is the first for Suffolk over Lasell since a 3-0 decision Oct. 1, 2016.
  • Leo has found the back of the net in each of Suffolk's last two games, while Abouzeid has assisted in all three of the Rams' outings this year.
  • Sorensen and Taj each produced their first collegiate points. The former scored his first collegiate goal, while the latter notched his first helper.
