Saints Edge Men's Soccer 2-1

Box Score

Somerville, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Saints (2-2, 1-0 GNAC) edged the Suffolk University Rams (1-2, 0-1 GNAC) by a 2-1 margin in Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Mathew Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining converting on a penalty kick as the Saints picked up their first conference win of the season. Koenemann pushed his shot on the ground beating Suffolk goalkeeper Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) to his right as the junior midfielder tallied his first goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Wilhem DuBois (Key Biscayne, Fla.) made nine saves in the victory, including a spectacular leaping save with seven minutes remaining stopping Suffolk sniper Danny Lloyd (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) to preserve the victory.

Suffolk got on the board in the game’s seventh minute as freshman Jeff Harvey (Reading, Mass.) snuck by two Saints defenders taking a feed from freshman Nicholas DiCicco (Wethersfield, Conn.) for his first collegiate goal.

Emmanuel evened the score at 1-1 with five minutes remaining in the first half as freshman Danny Richman (Westfield, Mass.) made a couple of shifty moves to beat the Suffolk defense and put the Saints on the board.

Suffolk came out firing in the second half with eight shots in the second half, compared to three by Emmanuel, but the Rams could not tally another goal. Lloyd had four of the Rams’ shots in the second period. Suffolk outshot Emmanuel 21-8 in the game.

Both teams will be back in action on Monday as the Saints host M.I.T. at 7:00pm. Suffolk will host Wheelock College at 4:00pm in non-league action at Dilboy Stadium.
