Men's Soccer Fall In NCAA Tournament Opener

Williamstown, MA—The Williams College men's soccer team defeated Suffolk University 8-0 in a NCAA first round tournament match Saturday afternoon.

 

The Ephs (12-2-2) scored early in the first half in the 4th minute of the game when Kiel Bonhomme sent a through ball on the ground into the box which connected with a charging Charlie Romero who finished the ball past the keeper to give the Ephs a 1-0 lead. The Ephs struck again in the 15th minute off a free kick from Joe Vella. Vella drilled the ball from 23 yards out into the upper right post of the goal to put the Ephs up 2-0.

 

The Ephs scored again in the 35th minute to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Gordon Atkins received a ball in the right corner and proceeded to beat the defender and send a sailing cross into the box. Charlie Romero beat the defender to the ball and flicked it with his foot over the outstretched hands of keeper Matt Esposito. Esposito had 11 saves on the day for the Rams (11-8-1).

 

The Ephs never looked back from that point on scoring an additional goal in the first half off a penalty kick by Joe Vella in 43rd minute. The Ephs added 4 more goals in the second half in the 62nd, 65th, 66th, and 83rd minutes by Gordon Atkins, Dan Morrisroe, Matt Kastner, and Usher Kushaina respectively. The Rams, whose season ended today, did not have any significant goal scoring opportunities on the day.

 

Overall the Ephs outshot the Rams 37 to 3. The Ephs also had 11 corner kicks to only 3 for the Rams. Williams' keeper Peter Morrell had the only save on the day for the Ephs in 54 minutes of play.
