DiCicco, Men's Soccer Top Mustangs 2-1 in Overtime

The Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropped their third Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest to visiting Suffolk University 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.  In a very physic al game with suspect officiating, the Mustangs fall to 0-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play while the Rams improve to 5-3, 2-1 in the GNAC.

The hosts struck first on a well placed through ball from sophomore Joe Casey (Merrimack, MA/Pentucket) to freshman forward Steven MacDonald (Medford, MA/Arlington Catholic) who finished the goal in the right corner past a diving Suffolk keeper for the 1-0 advantage at the 24 minute mark in the first half.

The visitors came out hunting early in the second half on a 50/50 header that was redirected by two players fighting to win the ball.  Unfortunately for Mount Ida, the ball was headed directly to a wide open freshman Nicholas DiCicco (Wethersfield, MA) heading over the goalkeeper tying the game at 1-1 with almost the entire second half to go.

After a hard fought battle throughout the second half the teams would head into the extra time period in a knotted 1-1 tie.

Six minutes into the first overtime the visitors struck for the winning score.  Mount Ida goalkeeper junior Steven Enright (South Kingston, RI/Prout) stuffed another DiCicco shot but had trouble holding on to the ball, the rebound popped back out to DiCicco who fired in the game winner for the 2-1 victory.

Mount Ida goalkeeper Enright was outstanding the entire game with 10 saves while Suffolk netminder senior Jack DeJesus (Boston, MA) made four saves.

The Mustangs will host Daniel Webster College Tuesday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m. Suffolk will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they host Tufts University at 7:00pm.
