Men’s Hockey to Compete at 58th Codfish Bowl

BOSTON – Suffolk men's hockey travels across town this weekend to get the New Year underway at the 58th Codfish Bowl. The Rams open the tournament Friday, Jan. 5 versus Connecticut College at 4 p.m. and will face either Worcester State or the tournament host UMass Boston Saturday, Jan. 6.

ABOUT THE CODFISH BOWL

  • Began in 1965 as a lower-division answer to the Beanpot. The series was used as a showcase for the smaller schools in college hockey. 
  • Hosted by UMass Boston since 1982. 
  • Suffolk will be making its sixth appearance at the Codfish Bowl, first since 2014. 
  • The Rams have captured the Codfish Bowl Championship once, in 2009. 
  • Suffolk has finished third once (2008) and fourth three times (2006, 2007, 2014).  

LAST TIME OUT
Suffolk men's hockey fell in its first semester finale, 6-2, to Southern Maine Friday, Dec. 8 at the USM Ice Arena.

SUFFOLK SCORES

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk (2-10-1) aims to start the New Year on a high note after going 1-1-1 in December.  

The Rams' scoring unit is led by graduate student Devin Lowe, who owns three goals and a team-high eight helpers. Carter Schram has found the back of the net a team-best four times and has set-up four strikes to sit second on the squad in points, while Joe O'Brien rounds out the top trio of point earns with one marker and six handouts. Nick Liotino matches Schram's squad-best four goals to go along with two assists.  

Kannon Flageolle (3.99 GAA, .897 save%) and Chris Jackson (4.78 GAA, .847 save%) have played every other game in net for the Rams over first semester action. Junior CJ Hapward joined the blue-and-gold's netminder contingent over the break after starting his collegiate career at Colby. 

CAMELS CATCH-UP
Connecticut College brings a 3-5-1 overall record into the tournament after skating to a 4-4 draw with No. 12 Endicott Tuesday, Jan. 2.  

Quinn Kennedy paces the Camels 28-goal offense with 10 points on three goals and a team-best seven assists. Four skaters share second on the squad with six points apiece in Michael DiMascolo (4g, 2a), Rocco Testa-Basi (4g, 2a), John Russo (3g, 3a) and Andrew Eberling (2g, 4a).  

In net, Will McEvoy (2.97 GAA, .913 save%) and Sean Dynan (2.70 GAA, .905 save%) have split time. The former has played five games, while the latter has defended between the pipes in three. Kellen Beauton (2.00 GAA, .931 save%), meanwhile, has one game under his belt.

LANCERS LOOKOUT
A three-game skid put Worcester State at 3-8-0 on the season. 

Martin Dlugolinsky is the top offensive contributor with an evenly divided 10-point stat line of five goals and five assists. Nders Gongstad (6g, 3a), MaxWell Tucker (3g, 5a) and Brendan Ronan (3g, 4a) are consistent contributors as well to the Lancers 27-goal offense.

Jakub Kubik (3.82 GAA, .913 save%) and Wyatt Friedlander (3.94 GAA, .915 save%) share time as WSU's goaltender.

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Since 2000, Suffolk is 7-4-3 against Worcester State. 
  • The Rams and Lancers could meet for the first time since Nov. 10, 2011, a 7-4 loss to the Lancers.
  • The last Suffolk win in the series against Worcester State came Dec. 1, 2007 via a 7-5 decision. 
  • On a neutral ice Suffolk sports a 1-0-2 mark versus WSU. 
  • The foes last tangled on neutral service Nov. 10, 2007. Suffolk won that meeting, 8-4. 
  • Suffolk and Worcester State have needed extra time to decide a winner three times.
  • Every OT outing between the Rams and Lancers has ended in a stalemate.

BEACONS BREAKDOWN
UMass Boston skates into the weekend with a 4-7-2 overall record after wrapping up first semester action with a 4-4 tie versus then-No. 11 Endicott.

The Beacons 36-goal scoring unit is well-balanced with 28 players producing at least one point and 18 of those with multiple points to their credit. Jude Kurtas (5g, 3a) and Conor Foley (3g, 5a) anchor the attack with mirror image stat lines.  

Sam Best has taken on the bulk of the work load in net. Over six games played, all starts, he has assembled a 4.20 GA and .881 save percentage. Sal Carabelli (2 GP, 2.57 GAA, .926 save%) and Antonio Tarantino (3 GP, 8.34 GAA, .818 save%) have seen time in net for UMB as well.  

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • The Suffolk, UMass Boston series began in 1980 and the foes could meet for the 20th time Saturday. 
  • The Rams trail the all-time series, 2-16-1.
  • The Beantown rivals battled in overtime once in the all-time series, Dec. 6, 2019. That outing ended in a 4-4 draw. 
  • Suffolk is in the hunt for its first win over UMass Boston since a 2-1 decision Dec. 30, 2009. 
  • On the road, the Rams are 1-4-0 against the Beacons. 
  • At home, Suffolk sports a 1-12-1 mark against UMB. 
  • Both teams own one victory on neutral ice, 1-1-0.
  • Suffolk and UMass Boston have played versus one another in the Codfish Bowl once before, in the 2008-09 consolation contest. The Rams defeated the Beacons in that battle, 3-2.
