Salve Regina Stops Men’s Hockey in CCC Opener, 5-2

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Suffolk men's hockey could not hang onto its first period lead as Salve Regina scored four unanswered goals to hand the Rams a 5-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference action at St. George's Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk sandwiched goals around a Salve Regine strike to hold a 2-1 lead after the opening period. Cole Scott lit the lamp first with help from Daniel McKiernan at the 7:05 mark. The Seahawks responded 22 seconds later to level the playing field.  

Nick Liotino potted a power play strike 1:31 later to push Suffolk in front 2-1. Carter Schram and Devin Lowe aided to the Rams' go-ahead goal. 

Three unanswered goals by SRU in the middle period put the Rams in a 4-2 hole. Two of the three strikes came on the man-up opportunity for the Seahawks. 

Salve Regina padded its advantage 2:25 into the third with its third power play marker for the 5-2 margin that remained at the end of regulation.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Kannon Flageolle logged a 28-save effort. 
  • Cayden Bailey notched a 29-stop performance. 

STATISTCALLY SPEAKING

  • Liotino and Scott scored Suffolk's goals. 
  • McKiernan, Lowe and Schrawm tallied one assist apiece. 
  • Salve Regina edged the Rams in shots, 33-31. 
  • Suffolk went 1-for-5 on the power play. 
  • The Seahawks went 3-for-4 on their man-up chances. 
  • SRU held the upperhand in face offs, 39-37.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk skated as the away team in its CCC debut for the first time. 
  • Suffolk met Salve Regina in its first CCC contest of a campaign for the second straight season. 
  • Lowe has poured in at least one point in all three of the Rams' games this season. He has extended his point streak to four games. In that span he has scored three goals and handed out four assists. 
  • McKiernan dished out his first collegiate assist. 
  • McKiernan has produced a point in the last two games. 
  • Scott scored his first goal of the season.
  • Liotino scored his second goal of the year.
