Men’s Hockey Falls Short at Salve Regina, 3-1

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Suffolk men's hockey fell to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent, Salve Regina, 3-1, Saturday night at St. George's Rink  to wrap up a home-and-home opening weekend series against the Seahawks, which jump started the Shawn McEachern era for the Rams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first 20 of the CCC matchup ended without a goal from either side, sending the teams to their locker rooms tied at 0-0. Goaltender Cal Wilcox stopped all six shots he faced for the Rams in the first period, while Kohl Reddy stopped the lone shot on net in the first period for the Seahawks. 

Salve Regina going the scoring going 2:33 into the middle period when Matthew Brunton produced a power play marker with the help of Hoon Kim to take a 1-0 lead.

Suffolk tied the game less than three minutes later when senior captain Nick Lachaine found the back of the net to even the game at 1-all. 

The Seahawks reclaimed the lead with 2:30 to go before the second intermission. Damon Zimmer sent a shot past Wilcox to push the host ahead, 2-1. The goal was assisted by Matthew Brunton and Walter Baumann.

Salve Regina added to its lead with just under a minute left to play in the second period when Seth Benson scored off a feed from Dylan Price to make it a two-goal margin. 

All the damage would be done in the second period for both teams, with both defenses remaining stout until the final whistle for the 3-1 final. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Wilcox stopped 23 shots on net for the Rams.
  • Reddy sent away 11 shots in the winning effort. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Salve Regina outshot Suffolk, 26-12.
  • Troy Ladka led the way with three shots for the Rams.
  • Olle Akermark tested Reddy twice with a pair of shots.
  • The Seahawks narrowly led the face-off battle, 31-30.
  • Lachaine scored Suffolk's lone goal with no help.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • McEachern faced his first test on the road as a collegiate head coach.
  • Adam McNabney made his collegiate debut for the Rams.

Suffolk is slated for a home-and-home with CCC opponent Nichols College this upcoming week. Action begins Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:40 p.m. at Levy Rink in Harrisville, Rhode Island before the battle comes back to Eastie Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4:50 p.m. for the Rams Suicide Awareness Game.
