Men’s Hockey Falls in Barn Burner at UMass Dartmouth, 5-4

NEW BEDFORD, Mass.  – Suffolk men's hockey traded goals with UMass Dartmouth throughout the course of the non-conference contest, but the Rams were unable to get the equalizer in the third to fall just short to the Corsairs, 5-4, Sunday night at Hetland Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It only took 1:14 for the Corsairs to light the lamp for the first time. Dominic Dumas and Derek Britner found Michael Perrone to put Suffolk in a one-goal hole early. Shawn Montgomery evened the score at the 9:06 mark of the first period with helpers from Ryan Harrigan and Joe Feeney. Dartmouth managed to grab a 2-1 advantage with just over two minutes to go before the first intermissions as Dillon Radi found the back of the net.  

The playing field leveled at 2-all 9:17 into the second period when senior Billy Roche put away Daniil Ovchinnikov's pass. Things didn't stay that way for long as Tim Kippenberger put the hosts ahead once again 1:55 later. Two more minutes passed before the score equalized at three thanks to Devin Lowe's strike that was assisted by Samuel Rand and Nick Lachaine. The Corsairs responded 37 seconds later to take a 4-3 lead into locker rooms. 

Two more goals were scored in the final period. UMass Dartmouth was the team to net the puck first to stretch, doing so just 1:32 into the third, to stretch the distance two a pair of goals, which forced Suffolk to play catchup even more. Samuel Rand managed to slice the distance in half when he tucked in a pass from Olle Akermark at the midway point. The Corsairs' defense held off an onslaught of shots by the Rams in the closing minutes of the contest to secure the final 5-4 decision. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Cal Wilcox started between the pipes for Suffolk and made 19 saves in 33:49 of action. 
  • Jarrett Bovarnick suffered the setback after stopping five of the six shots he faced in the final 25:01. 
  • Chris Stangarone logged 36 saves in the victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • A different player was responsible for all four of the Rams' goals. 
  • Samuel Rand had his hand in two, scoring one and assisting another. 
  • Lowe, Montgomery and Roche each netted one goal. 
  • Akermark, Feeney, Harrigan, Lachaine and Ovchinikov all dished out one helper. 
  • Suffolk outshot UMass Dartmouth, 40-29. 
  • The Corsairs won the faceoff battle, 39-36. 
  • Neither team was successful on the power play. Suffolk went 0-for-3, while the Rams killed off both of its penalties.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Ovchinnikov is on a three-game point streak. In that stretch he has one goal and a pair of assists. 
  • Roche expanded his point streak to seven straight games. He has produced a point in every game Suffolk has scored this season. His point line features three goals and eight assists. 
  • Lowe is now on a four-game point streak. Over that time, he has five goals and two helpers.
  • Harrigan handed out his first collegiate assist. 
  • Lachaine has dished out an assist in back-to-back battles. 
  • Samuel Rand registered his first collegiate goal and had his first multi-point game.

SUFFOLK'S SCHEDULE
The Rams returned to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action this weekend with a home-and-home series with Salve Regina. Suffolk hosts the Seahawks Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m., before venturing to Rhode Island the next day, Saturday, Dec. 4 for an 8 p.m. puck drop.
