Hockey Falls In Season Opener 6-3

Marlborough, Mass.- Assumption College scored five unanswered goals in the second period as the Greyhounds defeated Suffolk University 6-3 at the Becker College Icebreaker Tournament.

Suffolk scored the lone goal of the first period just 1:03 into the game when Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Penn.) fed Jason Molle (Stoneham, Mass.)  for the early 1-0 advantage.

Assumption blew the game wide open in the second period, capped off by two power play goals. The first goal was scored when Suffolk was called for a delay of game penalty with two players already in the box, allowing Assumption to take a penalty shot. Junior Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass.) took the penalty shot, scoring through Suffolk goalie Jeff Rose's (Collinsville, Conn.) five hole, tying the game at one each. The Greyhounds took the lead 15 seconds later on a Kevin Glanzman (Massapequa, NY) power play goal. Assumption increased the lead to 3-1 when Matt Calos (North Reading, Mass.)  connected with Curtis Sernoskie (Ottawa, Ontario) at 14:44 of the period. The Greyhounds continued their barrage of goals as Dave Maiocco (Meford, Mass.) and Taylor Larsen scored before intermission, making the score 5-1.

The Greyhounds started the third period much like they end the second as Pat O'Kane (Hollis, NH) made the score 6-1 just 51 seconds into the frame. Suffolk added goals from Max Barron (St. Louis, MO.) and Brian Phillips (Longmeadow, Mass.) but it was too little, too late.

Jeff Rose made 25 saves in a losing effort as the Rams fell to 0-1 on the season. Suffolk will play the loser of the Becker College and Stonehill College game at 1:50pm tomorrow at the New England Sports Center. Assumption goalie Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla.) made 26 saves to earn the win. The Greyhounds will play in the Icebreaker Championship game tomorrow at 4:50pm.
