Hockey Team Opens With Two Tournament Losses

The Suffolk hockey team dropped its first two games of the season at the Becker College Ice Breaker Tournament Nov. 7-8.

The Rams lost to Nichols College in the first round, 4-1, to advance to the consolation game where they lost to host Becker, 3-1. Suffolk's next contest will be Saturday at Walter Brown Arena against Worcester State at 5:15 p.m.

Becker College defeated Suffolk 3-1, Saturday in the consolation game of the tournament. Becker College junior Mike Caprio (Valencia, CA) and freshman Nate Sayer (Dracut, MA) each had goals for Becker.  Chris Reily (Lexington, MA) added the third goal, scoring on a Hawks' power play.

Suffolk got on the scoreboard and broke up the shutout with a goal by Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, CA) with just under 10 minutes remaining in the third period. Suffolk goaltender Bill Gilbert (Forestdale, MA) made 24 saves in the loss. Hawks netminder Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, NY) had 25 saves in his first collegiate win.

In the opening game of the tournament, Nichols College defeated Suffolk University 4-1. Nick Davis (Pittsburgh, PA) scored Suffolk's lone goal on a power play late in the second period. 

The Rams fell behind early as the Bison scored just 46 seconds into the game on a Zeke Costello (Shelby Township, MI) goal. The Bison took a 2-0 lead on Andrew Ella's power play goal. Suffolk then cut the lead in half after Davis' goal, but the Rams were unable to capitalize on any more scoring chances.

Nichols' Matt Roberts (Merrimac, MA) added two goals late in the third period, the first coming on even strength and the second an empty netter to seal the victory. Suffolk goaltender Jeff Rose (Collinsville, CT) made 29 saves.
