BIDDEFORD, Maine – Mauro Stanchieri of the Suffolk men's golf team made history as he became the first Ram to capture a major award from a conference as he was named CCC Rookie of the Year. In addition to the accolade, he was also selected as a first-team honoree.
Voting for the All-CCC Teams and major awards was conducted by the eight CCC men's golf head coaches during the week following the CCC Championship.
The sophomore from El Hatillo, Venezeula, joined an elite list of Rams to be recognized by the leaguing becoming the second student-athlete to earn the all-conference feat in the CCC era and fifth ever with just a trio of men's golfers earning the recognition throughout the Suffolk's tenure in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and Pablo Bedoya Montero securing a spot on the CCC second team a year ago.
Stanchieri played nine rounds for Suffolk this pyear, produing a 78.17 stroke average. He had two top-five finishes, both coming in conference vents. He tied for fourth at the CCC Fall Qualifier with a score of 78 (+6) to help Suffolk earn a spot at the CCC Championships this spring where he finished in a share of fifth with a two-day score of 153 (+9). Throughout the two-semester season, Stanchieiri was recognized by the league twice as rookie of the week.
