RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk qualified for the CCC Championship in its first-ever opportunity this fall after the pandemic forced the 2021 Championship into an "all-welcome" event. Sophomore Vijay Sakura, who joined the team this semester, has stood out in both of the blue-and-gold events this spring.

Sakura's classmate Mauro Stanchieri anchored the Rams effort at the CCC Qualifier as he finished tied for fourth with a +6, 78, just two strokes shy of the third-place performer, Ryan Zogby of Western New England.

ABOUT THE FIELD

  • Nichols will serve as the host of the 2022 championship event after winning the CCC Fall Qualifying event in September. Endicott, Suffolk and the University of New England also have a chance to capture the conference crown.
  • Nichols has been led by junior Colby Mitchell, who was the medalist at the CCC Fall Qualifier with a three-under 69. Mitchell also took first place at the Farmingdale State Invitational this spring.
  • Endicott finished second at the fall qualifier to keep its streak of CCC Championship appearances alive. The Gulls have qualified for the championship every year since the format was established in 2013-14. Their top golfer this year has been Nicholas Grimblias. He finished second at the CCC Fall Qualifier and was the medalist in two events the Gulls have participated this spring.
  • With the exception of the 2021 CCC Championship, which included all conference members, UNE will be making its return to the CCC Championship for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The Nor'easters had qualified in 2019-20 before the spring portion was canceled due to the pandemic. They are led by junior Tom Higgins, who has been UNE's low-man in six of its 10 events, including the CCC Qualifier in which he finished sixth.

ABOUT THE COURSE
The Raceway Golf Club was designed and built by John Hoenig and his son Donald J. Hoenig, PGA in the mid-1940's with the original nine holes opening in 1947. The first nine holes were built on the existing Hoenig family dairy farm property. The original 1700's family farmhouse is still located directly adjacent to the 16th green. During the early 1960's the second nine holes were constructed offering the current layout and configuration that remains today despite many green, tee, sand trap, fairway renovations and the addition of irrigation. The last remaining green from the original 1940's construction – built in true New England "push up" style – is #16.

Raceway Golf Club today is a full service 18-hole golf club with practice facility, owned and operated now in its 4th generation of the Hoenig family. The Club offers daily golf special packages, tournaments, individual memberships and lessons. Featuring classic New England golf course design and layouts with rolling hills, old growth trees and sprawling historic stone walls, Raceway Golf is the perfect place for a foursome, large outing or a late day relaxing 9 holes at sunset.
