Men’s Basketball's Hot Starts Leads to 89-73 Win Over Gordon

BOSTON – The Rams buried nine 3-pointers in the first half to take a comfortable 53-38 lead into halftime which helped Suffolk men's basketball take down Gordon, 89-73, Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.  

Four different Suffolk student-athletes had double figures in points including 20-plus point performances from Keenan Robertson and Danny Yardemian, who led the charge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Six different players knocked down a trey in the first 20 minutes to help Suffolk build a 53-28 advantage.  

The sharp shooting started from the get-go as the Rams used long balls from Robertson, Evan Cook and Cole LeVangie to take an 11-2 edge in the first three minutes. 

Jake Gomez and Robertson teamed up to push the margin to double figures, 22-11, before Jeff Juron took a timeout with just under 13 minutes left on the clock in the first half. 

Nick Verdile got in on the shooting show to turn it into a 16-point gap at the 11:02 mark and 2:29 later Yardemian put a trifecta on his stat line to turn it into a34-15 game in Suffolk's favor. 

The blue-and-gold took their largest lead, 21, of the opening stanza with just over six minutes to go before halftime when Robertson buried his third 3-pointer of the half. 

Six straight points from the Fighting Scots got the distance down to 15, which remained when the teams headed to the locker room, 53-38.  

Back-to-back buckets from downtown by Yardemian and LeVavngie started the second half for Suffolk to extend the edge back to 18, 59-41. 

Gordon got the margin down to nine, 63-54, with 14:50 on the clock as it outscored Suffolk, 14-4.  

Yardemian ignited an 11-0 Rams run that restored the 20-point margin, 76-56, at the midway point of the second stanza.  

Suffolk had answers for each of Gordon's attempts at a comeback down the stretch to walk away with the 89-73 conference victory, its third straight.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Robertson finished with a game-high 21 points on a 9-for-13 showing from the floor and a 3-for-4 effort from downtown, all of which came in the first half. He added eight boards, one assist, one block and one steal. 
  • Yardemian also shot 9-for-13 on the night to finish with 20 points to go along with five helpers and four caroms. 
  • Cook contributed 12 points, five handouts, one board and one steal. 
  • LeVangie rounded out the Rams in double figures with 10 points. The junior was on the verge of a double-double with nine boards. He also had a pair of assists and blocks, respectively, and one takeaway. 
  • Gomez pitched in eight caroms and six points. 
  • Owen Walters added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench. 
  • As a team, Suffolk shot 50.7 percent (36-71) on the night and 42.3 percent (11-26) from 3-point range. 
  • At the line, the Rams went 6-for-9. 
  • Suffolk's 12 offensive rebounds turned into 14 points, while Gordon's four boards on the offensive end resulted in one. 
  • The Rams outrebound the Fighting Scots, 48-29.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk improved to 17-7 all-time against Gordon. 
  • The Rams have won seven in a row versus the Fighting Scots. 
  • At home, Suffolk is 5-2 against Gordon. 
  • The Rams are now 7-1 versus Gordon in the Juron era. 
  • Prior to tip-off, Suffolk recognized Robertson as the 33rd member of Suffolk's 1,000 point club. The junior reached the feat in his 65th career game, an 89-78 win at Hartford Wednesday, Jan. 17.
  • Yardemian had his third 20-point game as a Ram. He tied a career-high in field goals made (9).
  • Robertson had his fourth straight 20-plus point performance. He has scored 20 points in six of the last seven games and nine times this season. 
  • Walters tied a personal-best seven rebounds. 
  • Matt Draheim made his collegiate debut.
