Baseball Secures Sweeps, Takes Nightcap Over Anna Maria, 8-4

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk baseball capped off its non-conference doubleheader with Anna Maria with an 8-4 triumph over the AMCATs Sunday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park. The win marked the Rams eighth in a row.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 8 | Anna Maria 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (23-13) | Anna Maria (16-21)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk played from behind as Anna Maria scored one in the first and two in the third.

The Rams righted the wrongs in the bottom of the third. Colin Flynn knocked a one-out single to center and put on his running shoes on a failed pick-off attempt that allowed him to move all the way to third. Garret Roberts' triple to left center brought Flynn in before Roberts scored himself on Jonny Gilbride's single to left. A walk by Harry Painter was followed by a game-tying, one-run, stand-up double off Alex Sorenti-Burns' bat. A wild pitch allowed Painter to cross the plate and send Suffolk ahead. Sorenti-Burns would then pad the gap as he scored thanks to Max Iorio's sac fly to center that made it a 5-3 Suffolk game.

Anna Maria made things interesting in the fifth when it pulled within one. A throwing error allowed Brady Aylwar to not only reach safely but take second. He worked his way to third on a productive ground out by Jarryn Barbe and came home on Ian White's single to second to trim the margin to one, 5-4.

Suffolk wasted no time getting that run back as Roberts sent a lead-off solo shot to right field to open the home half of the third. A base hit by Gilbride was followed by a fielding mishap from the AMCATS middle infield that let Rams land on first and second. Sorenti-Burns sent a base hit up the middle to bring in Gilbride. With the blue-and-gold ahead 7-4, Anna Maria brought Misael Guzma in to shove. He kept the Rams from scoring anymore in the inning, but the damage was already done, and Suffolk held onto a three-run advantage.

In the sixth the Rams extend the edge to four when Flynn tagged up on a sac fly from Gilbride. The freshman reached on single to left and swiped second and third, respectively, to set up Gilbride's RBI.

Anna Maria used a handful of pinch hitters to load the bases in the top the seventh. The AMCATs would be stranded there as Patrick Desmond sat down Dominic Brown swinging.
