Baseball Slugs Past WNE in Game 1, 16-7

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk baseball had five Rams with multiple hits to take care of Western New England, 16-7, in game one of a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Trelease Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 16 | Western New England 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (13-12, 3-4 CCC) | Western New England (10-11, 1-3 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk burst out to the 6-0 lead with two runs in the first and four in the second. Harry Painter's triple to right center in the opening inning brought in Jonny Gilbride, who walked, before Painter scored on a wild pitch. In the second, back-to-back wild pitches allowed two more Ram runs to come in to double the distance. Alex Sorenti-Burns and Max Iorio collected on RBI each on a base hit for the six-run advantage.

The Golden Bears got five runs back in the home half of the inning. A Rams error let the first WNE run of the day come in before Ryan Montini  three-run shot trimmed the gap down to two and Paul Villecco's one-run double made it a one run game, 6-5.

In the third, WNE leveled the playing field. Once again Montini's bat came up big as he doubled to right field to plate S Jamieson, who led off the frame with a walk, to make it 6-6.

Iorio responded for the Rams in the fourth with a grand slam to send Suffolk in front, 10-6.

The teams traded runs in the fifth to keep the four-run margin. Suffolk's run came behind Gilbride's double to left that scored Joe Norris, who singled.

The Rams lengthened their lead back to six with one run in the sixth and seventh, respectively, before bursting out to a three-run eighth for the 16-7 advantage.

In the sixth, Max Martin singled and scored on a throwing error by WNE's centerfielder. An inning later, Painter provided an RBI on a double to right field. In the eighth, a balk, sac fly from Collin Flynn and a base hit by Garret Roberts gave the blue-and-gold a nine-run lead, which remain through the remainder of the contest.
