Baseball Tripped Up at UMass Boston, 5-4

BOSTON – Suffolk baseball pulled within one in the sixth, but was unable to complete the comeback at UMass Boston as the Rams fell to the Beacons, 5-4, in the closer of a home-and-home series Thursday at Monan Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | UMass Boston 5
RECORDS: Suffolk (12-12) | UMass Boston (16-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMB took a 4-0 lead in the first frame behind three hits, two walks, a hit by pitch and a Rams fielding mishap.

The teams traded runs in the third. Suffolk scored on a Jonny Gilbride double to left center that scored Garret Roberts. Roberts worked a two-out walk to become the second Rams runner of the day and eventual first run.

Another blue-and-gold fielding error allowed the Beacons to restore the four-run gap, 5-1, with three frames in the books.

Suffolk took advantage of a new UMB pitcher as Jack Cangelosi started the sixth out of the pen. With the bases chucked on a hit by pitch, single and error, Alex Sorenti-Burns collected two RBI on a base hit to right field. A fielder's choice when Max Iorio put the ball in play allowed Harry Painter to come in to trim the gap down to one.

Although the blue-and-gold's defense held the Beacons scoreless the rest of the way, the Rams stranded one runner in the seventh and eighth, respectively, as well to keep the 5-4 score at the end of the action.
