Baseball Drops Beantown Battle to UMass Boston, 12-5

BOSTON – Suffolk baseball fell behind early and never made its way back to drop a 12-5 decision to UMass Boston Wednesday afternoon at East Boston Memorial ParkA six-run third inning by the Beacons proved to be the difference maker in the cross city clash.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | UMass Boston 12
RECORDS: Suffolk (12-11) | UMass Boston (15-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A pair of Suffolk throwing at the hot corner allowed the Beacons to break out to a 6-0 lead in the third inning.

The Beacons lengthened their lead in the sixth with a pair of runs to put the Rams in an eight-run hole.

Alex Sorenti-Burns put Suffolk on the board with a solo shot to left field to eliminate the shutout.

UMass Boston got that run back in the top of the seventh. Breoen Parker walked and stole second and Bostyn Burris traded places with him with a stand-up double to right to make it a 9-1 game with 6.5 frames in the books.

The Rams made up another run in the home half of the seventh. Jonny Gilbride brought in Colin Flynn with a double. Flynn worked a walk to take first and moved into scoring position on a passed ball.

Extra base hits helped Suffolk chip down the distance in the bottom of the eight. Sorent-Burns knocked his second long-ball of the day, this time to left center. An error allowed Christopher White to take first safely, and Sebastian Lampert brought the Ram in a double to left center to pull the host within five, 9-4.

UMB regained the eight-run margin in the top of the ninth, 12-4.

Garret Roberts let a no doubter fly to center, which looked to spark a Rams rally. Gilbride followed suit with a base knock up the middle and two outs later Max Iorio sent a double to right field to put runners in the corners. Pinch hitter Max Martin struck out swinging though to end the blue-and-gold's hopes of mounting a comeback.
