SUFFOLK IN THE CCC TOURNAMENT

  • The Rams are in the midst of its second trip and second in as many years in the CCC Tournament.
  • Suffolk secured its first CCC postseason win in Monday's Play-In contest, a 9-3 win over Gordon.
  • Suffolk and Salve Regina will face off for the first time in CCC Tournament history.

LAST TIME OUT

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk played its way into the double elimination bracket with a 9-3, play-in game win over Gordon Monday.

The Rams, who collected a program-best eight All-CCC awards, have relied on their 334-run offense to get to this point. CCC Co-Player of the Year Harry Painter has been a main ingredient to that production with team-leading numbers in hits (62) and RBI (46), behind the best slash line in the league .411/.471/.768. Joe Ward (52 H, 45 RBI, 42 R, 13 SB) and Luke Harder (58 H, 43 RBI, 33 R and 16 SB) are consistent contributors to the offense as well.

Suffolk has cycled through multiple arms throughout the season and will most likely use different wings to get through Wednesday's outing.

Both EJ Birch (28.0 IP, 19 K, 2.89 ERA) and Nick Reiser (50.1 IP, 4.29 ERA, 44 K) have been relied on heavily to start games over the course of the 2022 season, with Casey Sullivan (37.1 IP, 5.06 ERA, 30 K) also regularly appearing as both a starter and a closer.  Birch and Sullivan each saw time on Monday, however, so they'll likely sit on Wednesday, which makes room for the experienced hurlers in George Breslin (29.1 IP, 19 K), and Steven Rossi (27.0 IP,26 K).

THE SALVE SHOW
Following a sweep of then-No. 16/22 Endicott in the last weekend of their regular season, the Seahawks propelled their way over the Gulls to take the CCC regular-season crown, with an unbeaten 14-0-2 conference record.

Salve Regina, who is receiving votes in the d3baseball.com Top 25 national poll as of May 8, recorded a .322 batting average, .437 on-base percentage, and .486 slugging percentage on top of 35 home runs, helping them to a 26-9-2 regular-season finish.

Offensively, Tyler Cannoe, Brandon Grover and CCC Defensive Player of the Year Dylan Ketch are the main point of conversation. Cannoe boasts a team-high 36 RBI on 49 hits behind a .338 average to go along with 33 runs scored. Ketch has the most hits, 51, and is tied for second on the squad in runs batted in with Grove with 35 apiece.

Salve Regina's staff is anchored by one of the best arms in Division III this year, Dominic Perachi. In his nine appearances, all starts, the junior left-hander set league-highs in wins (8), strikeouts (99), and ERA (0.47), which is the best in D3 thus far this season. Perachi, the CCC Pitcher of the Year, is complimented on the hill by fellow starters Patrick Maybach (59.2 IP, 2.56 ERA, 80 K) and Brayden Clark (52.2 IP, 2.73 ERA, 56 K) and closer Andrew Roman (14 APP, 22.0 IP, 1.64 ERA, 30 K).

WE MEET AGAIN
Salve Regina swept Suffolk in the regular-season series. The Seahawks took down the Rams, 9-2, in game one, before putting together a 14-2 nightcap triumph.

  • There has never been a shutout between Suffolk and Salve Regina.
  • The Rams and Seahawks have needed extra time to decide a winner once.

EYES ON THE GAME

RAMS RECOGNITION
In its second year in the league, a Suffolk baseball player was crowned the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year as Harry Painter shared the top mark. In addition, seven Rams garnered All-CCC status.

Painter double-dipped in the awards with a share of the player of the year title and a first-team nod. Infielders Garret Roberts and Christian Seariac along with centerfielder Joe Ward earned spots on the second team with catcher Shane Lake and outfielders Marc Birbiglia and Luke Harder grabbing third-team recognition. The seven all-league accolades from the CCC are the most for Suffolk in its short tenure in the league, upstaging last season's six awards.
