Baseball Run Rules Western New England in Game 2, 16-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk baseball scored 15 unanswered runs including an explosive nine-run sixth inning en route to a 16-2, seven-inning victory over Western New England in game two of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) double feature at Trelease Park Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk wasted no time to get on the board as it struck for three runs in the first inning. The offensive output came with three consecutive bases loaded hit by pitches.  

Two innings later, the Rams doubled the distance with three more runs. Harry Painter led off with a double down the left field line and two batters later cruised in on Blase Cormier's single to left field. Dylan January worked a base on balls to chuck the bags and set up a sac fly for Jonny GilbrideGarret Roberts got into the RBI mix with a base hit to left that allowed Cormier to score.  

The score stood still until the sixth when the blue-and-gold bats blasted in nine runs. The Golden Bears went through two arms in the inning that saw Suffolk knock five hits highlighted by multi-run extra base hits from January (double) and Jonny Gilbride (homer).

WNE eliminated the shutout in the bottom of the sixth and the teams traded one run each in the seventh for the 16-2 final. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Nick Reiser registered the win in relief. He registered a two-run, six-hit, three-walk, three-strikeout effort over 5.0 innings. 
  • Shawn Nosky started on the hill and tossed 1.0 inning of scoreless action with two hits allowed. 
  • Billy Beneke closed the game with just one hit allowed in the final frame. 
  • Robert Zawacki suffered the setback after giving up three runs on three walks in 0.2 innings. 
  • Kyle Roberts saw the most time on the hill for WNE and put together a three-run, four-hit, two-walk, one-strikeout effort in 2.0 innings. 
  • Matt Lauria (1 H) and Sean Hogan (1 BB, 1 K) proved to be the most successful hurlers for the Golden Bears with an inning of work apiece. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Cormier brought in three runs on two hits and scored once. 
  • January and Gilbride each had three RBI, one hit, one run scored and one walk. The former logged a double, while the latter knocked a ball out of the park. 
  • Painter provided two hits including a double for two RBI and one run scored. 
  • Harder had two RBI, one hit, a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. 
  • Joe Ward scored three times to go along with two hits, including a double, and one RBI. 
  • Roberts recorded two hits and one RBI. 
  • Christian Seariac added two runs scored and one hit. 
  • Marc Birbiglia scored three runs. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk moved to 20-18 all-time against Western New England. 
  • The Rams are now 2-6 in the Anthony Del Prete era against the Golden Bears. 
  • Gilbride matched a career-high three RBI. 
  • Gilbride knocked his fourth homer of the year. 
  • January brought in a career-high three RBI and produced his first collegiate two-bagger.
  • Ward has had multiple hits in the last three games. 
  • Ward tied a career-high three runs scored. 
  • Gilbride (12 games), Harder (four games), Painter (nine games), Ward (three games), Seariac (five games) and Roberts (four games) extended their hit streaks.
