Depression Awareness Week Speaker: Abraham Sculley from Active Minds

Depression Awareness Week Speaker: Abraham Sculley from Active Minds

BOSTON – While mental health concerns are being normalized, there is still stigma that keeps folks from getting help. Storytelling and learning about people's experiences can help change the conversation around mental health.

Next week, Depression Awareness Week, join Suffolk Athletics and Counseling, Health and Wellness (CHW), on Monday, Oct. 3, for "Combatting the Stigma of Mental Health" at 3 p.m. at the Sky Lounge of Sargent Hall. The hour-long discussion led by Active Minds national speaker Abraham Sculley is designed to encourage and equip students and young adults with the tools and education necessary to engage in the conversation surrounding mental health and mental illness. Through vulnerability, Sculley shares his mental health story and address the common myths of mental illness, the negative effects of stigma, and ways to effectively combat stigma.

Sculley will share his experience as a college student living with a mental health condition. Sculley has spoken to over 1000 individuals about his experience and facilitates workshops and events across the country.

Scully graduated from the University of West Florida with his bachelor's degree in Psychology. He is now a certified Mental Health First Aid advocate and uses his passion to inspire others. He continues to use his story to promote the importance of mental health and assist others in reaching their highest potential in their physical, spiritual and mental health.

This event is hosted by Suffolk Athletics and CHW. A full list of Depression Awareness Week events at the University is detailed below. Please contact wellness@suffolk.edu for questions about upcoming events.
