Kamara Named GNAC Athlete of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – Mariama Kamara of the Suffolk women's indoor track & field team was tabbed GNAC Athlete of the Week after her New England Regional qualifying performance at the Tufts Invitational over the weekend, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

In the four weeks that the conference has named a best athlete over a seven-day stretch all of the honorees have been Rams. Kamara kept the Rams athlete of the week streak going as the third Suffolk student-athlete this season to garner the feat joining her classmates Emily Manfra and Emma Weisse. Manfra, who was the first-ever athlete of the week Dec. 9, 2019, became the first-time two-time honoree Jan. 13, while Weisse split up Manfra's nods Dec. 16, 2019. Overall, Suffolk owns 62.5 percent (5-8) of the league's weekly accolades with Sarah Lawton earning rookie of the week feat Dec. 16, 2019.

Kamara's earned her first weekly acknowledgement of her career after punching her tickets to regionals for the second straight season in the 60-meter dash. She qualified for the finals at Tufts with a prelim time of 8.28. She topped that in the finals, clocking an 8.10, which tops the GNAC this season, to seal second in the field of 25 Saturday.

Suffolk is back in action this weekend at Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Classic. The women will compete Friday, Jan. 24.
