Women’s Tennis Surprises JWU, Wins Fourth Straight

BOSTON – The Suffolk women's tennis team was the first of Johnson & Wales' nine opponents this season to defeat the Wildcats as the Rams notched a 5-3 GNAC victory, the team's fourth straight, Saturday afternoon at Buckingham, Brown & Nichols.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk took a 2-1 lead in the match with wins at first and third doubles. The Rams sealed their victorious fate by taking the first three singles victories thanks to No. 6 Danlyn Medou, No. 1 Valentina Medina and No. 2 Aidiana Sagyndykova.
 

SUFFOLK STANDOUTS

  •  Medina and Isabel Rathlev put Suffolk on the board first with an 8-2 win as the Rams' top tandem over Morgan Thompson and Luiza Silva Simoes. 
  • Eugenia Skorobogatova and Christina Texidor made it 2-0 with an 8-4 triumph in the third doubles position, taking down Holly Olson and Madison Hernandez. 
  • Medou defeated Ashley Hartford, 7-5, 6-4, in the sixth slot to push Suffolk's lead to two, 3-1. 
  • Medina tripped up Thompson, 6-4, 6-0, on the first court and set up match point. 
  • Sagyndykova clinched the victory with as the senior bested Nina Cohen, 6-4,6-4, in the second spot.

NOTEABLES

  • Suffolk is now one of three teams in the GNAC standings with one single conference loss this season as Simmons and JWU also have one setback. The Sharks have played one more match than the Rams and Wildcats, however, to currently sit in first place. 
  • The Rams' fourth straight win marks the longest win streak in 2016 and the most wins in a row for Suffolk since stringing five together to close out the 2015 regular season.
