Women’s Basketball Stuns Emmanuel, 73-59

BOSTON – Four different players put up double figures to lead Suffolk women's basketball to a 73-59 victory over Emmanuel Saturday afternoon at Andy Yosinoff Court.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 73 | Emmanuel 59
RECORDS: Suffolk (13-6, 5-1 GNAC) | Emmanuel (13-7, 5-2 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was Suffolk from the get-go as the visitors built a 10-point cushion in the first 2:43 minutes, that blossomed to a 22-12 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes. Alexis Hackett spearheaded the charge with seven points.

The Rams kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second stanza, adding to their advantage and going up by as many as 18, 36-18, with 4:12 left before half time. Emmanuel put on a late charge to cut the margin down to 13, 38-25, as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Out of the break, Suffolk hung onto the double-digit distance in the first four minutes as it stayed in front, 45-31. The Saints made things interesting out of a Rams timeout as the hosts used a 12-5 run to trim the gap to seven, 50-43, at the end of the third quarter.

Suffolk controlled the opening action of the fourth frame putting in nine unanswered points, which was capped off by Emily Welling's first bucket of the day, a traditional three-point play, to restore the double figure edge, 59-43, at the midway point.

Emmanuel made moves for a comeback, but for every bucket the Saints scored, the Rams responded, until there was less than three minutes to go.

After Hackett hit a freebie, the Saints scored nine straight points to pull within seven, 64-57, at the 2:26 minute mark.

The teams traded hoops over the next two possession to keep things interesting. With less than two minutes to play, Emmanuel gambled by sending Suffolk to the free throw line. The Rams took care of business at the charity stripe to preserve the victory.
