Bourikas Brings Home NEWBA Player of the Week

BOSTON – Fresh off her GNAC Corvias Player of the Week honor, Georgia Bourikas has been named the New England Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (NEWBA) Player of the Week after averaging 29.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 3.0 apg in a 2-0 week for the Rams, the organization announced Monday afternoon.

Bourikas impressed in the pair of outings with back-to-back 20-plus point including a career-high 30-point night at Fitchburg State to lead the second-half surge in the 69-61 comeback with over the Falcons. Collectively she sheet 58.3 percent (21-36) from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-18) from the three-point line and did not miss at the foul line (8-8). She also helped out on the glass grabbing 9.5 rpg.

At Fitchburg, 26 of the senior co-captains 30 points came in the second half including her fifth triple of the night that gave the Rams the lead for good. The Hull, Massachusetts, native became the first Ram to knock down 30 or more points since Chelsea Campellone was two shy of the program's record a 43-point day in a n 85-63 win over Lasell Jan. 23, 2016.

In Saturday's showdown, Bourikas commanded the third quarter, scoring 17 of Suffolk's 26 points to keep Suffolk ahead of Framingham State. As time dwindled down the x-foot-x guard put away the go-ahead bucket with 23 seconds remaining in regulation before FSU tied things up to force OT. In the extra session, she connected on a pair from the line to secure the 90-87 win for Suffolk. Bourikas finished the afternoon with 28 points, eight boards and five assists.

The weekly honor is the second of her career as she earned her first-ever GNAC Corvias Player of the Week nod early today.

Bourikas and the Rams will cap off first semester action tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 12 when they entertain Boston Commons neighbor Emerson at 5 p.m. The contest is the first of two Suffolk basketball games that will be played on the Larry E. Smith & Michael S. Smith Court tomorrow as the men's squad hosts UMass Boston at 7 p.m.
