Women's Basketball Wins Season Opening Tournament

The Suffolk University Women's Basketball team opened the 2013-14 season by winning the Regis College Pride Tip-Off Tournament with a 52-48 victory over Sage College on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) finished with a team-high 13 points to lead Suffolk as she hit the go ahead jumper with four minutes remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Chelsea Campellone (Fall River, Mass.) led the Rams with eight second half points and also added 10 rebounds to help Suffolk regain the lead in the second half. Campellone scored six of her eight points in a two minute span as she hit a pair of free throws with 3:14 remaining to give Suffolk a 45-42 edge.

With 2:43 remaining freshman Kristyn Knockwood (Troy, N.Y.) would get the Gators within one point as her lay-in made it a 45-44 game.

Suffolk would go 7-for-9 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the contest to help seal off the victory for themselves. Freshman Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H.) would go 6-for-8 from the line for Suffolk in the waning minutes of the game as she finished with 11 points in the contest.

Junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player for the weekend. She led Suffolk with 23 points in their 74-50 victory over MIT on Saturday afternoon. She added five points in Sunday's victory. Junior Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass.) was also named to the All-Tournament team as she had nine points and six rebounds on Sunday.

Suffolk held a distinct edge in rebounds in the contest as they outrebounded the Gators, 57-36. Their edge on the glass proved to be the difference as they outscored Sage by a 16-5 margin on second chance points in the game.

Suffolk will be back in action on Thursday evening as they travel to Framingham State University for a non-conference matchup beginning at 6:00pm.
