Women’s Basketball Advances to Championship Round in the Regis Pride Tournament

The Suffolk University Women's Basketball team defeated the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers, 73-50 on Saturday afternoon in the Regis Pride Tournament first round.

Junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) scored a team-high 23 points to lead the Rams to their first victory of the season.  Quadri was 3-for-4 from three-point land and shot a perfect 4-for-4 on the free throw line.

Aside from Quadri three Rams also hit the double-digit mark with senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) netting 12 points and eight rebounds, junior Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass.) scoring 10 points and adding four assists, and freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) tallying 10 points.

Sophomore Maya Ramachandran (Freemont, Calif.) would break the Rams 12-point streak by hitting her first free throw. She ended up with seven points for the afternoon to lead the Engineers.

The Engineers stayed quiet until midway through the first half when sophomore Durva Bhandare (North Brunswick, N.J.) started them on their five-point unanswered run which would be their longest run of the night. Bhandare would total eight points for the Engineers, the second highest on the team.

The Rams lead the Engineers 40-28 into the second half.

Quadri got the Rams started in the second half with a three-point jump shot, where they would then go on to score 10 more unanswered points their longest streak of the game.

Freshman Liana Ilutzi (East Hanover, N.J.) put in a great effort for the Engineers leading the team with 12 points.

The Rams had their largest lead of 27 points (67-40) with just over five minutes to go in the second half. The Engineers never recovered and the Rams went on to score six more points before the end of the game.

Suffolk held a 59-40 edge in rebounds in the contest as sophomore Katie Murray (Winchester, Mass.) led all players with 12 boards.

Suffolk held Regis to just 23.8-percent shooting (15-for-63) in the game.

With the win the Rams advance to the championship round of the Regis Pride Tournament as they take on Sage College Gators at 3:00 pm.
