Cross Country Runs for GNAC Crown Saturday


BOSTON – The GNAC Cross Country Championship Crowns are up for grabs Saturday, Oct. 28 as Suffolk and its conference counterparts take the course at Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island. The women's 5k heat is set for a 1 p.m. start with the men scheduled for a 2 p.m. 8k. Johnson & Wales own hosting responsibilities of the championship.

POLL POSITION

As the Suffolk cross country men's and women's teams prep for the 2017 GNAC Championships this weekend, the conference has released the championship coaches' poll Thursday afternoon. The Rams' men's squad has been picked to finish seventh, while the women's team was selected sixth.

A YEAR AGO
The Suffolk cross country teams competed at the GNAC Championships held at Franklin Park in Boston on Oct. 29, 2016. Emmanuel, Lasell and Simmons shared the responsibilities in hosting as the Rams' men and women both placed sixth, respectively.

On the women's side, freshman Emily Manfra and Emma Weisse put together a stunning finish, placing second and third, respectively. Manfra's second-place showing is the best performance by a Ram in the history of the event with the Stoneham, Massachusetts, native garnering GNAC Rookie of the Year accolades, the first Suffolk runner to do so. The pair each earned spots on the league's first-team for their efforts at the championships.

LAST TIME OUT – WOMEN'S
On the third consecutive course, Emma Weisse anchored the Rams pack with the sophomore completing the 5k in 19:42 to finish fifth in a field of 210. Her top-five performance led not only all runners in Suffolk blue-and-gold, but all her conference counterparts representing, Emmanuel, Regis, Johnson & Wales, Rivier, Lasell and Mount Ida.

LAST TIME OUT – MEN'S
The Suffolk men's cross country team took the course at Boston's Franklin Park Friday, Oct. 13 for the Saints Invitational. 

Overall, Suffolk turned in an average 8k time of 38:33.40 to finish 21st in the field of 23. Wentworth won the event thanks clocking in an average of 27:00.60.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Suffolk's men's squad has capped off its 2017 slate, while the women have two championship races remaining. The Ram's women will next take the course at the ECAC Championships in Milton, New York, Saturday, Nov. 4.
