BOSTON – The 2018 Suffolk women's tennis season is two days away from the first serve as the Rams ready to welcome Thomas to North Reading High School for the season opener Sunday, Sept. 2. The blue-and-gold and Terriers are scheduled for a 12 p.m. first serve.

RAPID REWIND
Suffolk enters the 2019 season coming off a year in which the Rams went 6-7 overall. The Rams held their own in conference play going 1-2, highlighted with a dominant 8-1 victory at Norwich.   

Suffolk welcomes back five racquets from last season including Mike DeFelice, who was 4-6 in the top half of the singles ladder, and David Gruijic, who put together a 3-3 ledger in the bottom half of the lineup. In doubles, Gruijic paired up with Charles Tang for a 3-2 mark, the best among returners.

AT THE HELM
Steve Counihan is back on the bench for the Rams and he is joined by Associate Head Coach Matthew Tiberii, who leads Suffolk's women's squad.

FIRST SERVE
Suffolk looks to get back on track in season openers after falling to Wentworth 6-2 to raise the curtain on the 2018 campaign. 

For the fifth time in six years and the second since 2016, the Rams will meet Wentworth in the first match of the season.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
In a vote by the league's head coaches, the Suffolk men's tennis team has been predicted to take fifth in the GNAC North Division.

RAMS RINGLEADERS
Two days prior to first serve of the 2018 Suffolk women's tennis season, head coach Matthew Tiberii has unveiled that Elena Cisneros Garcia and Delaney Dunlap will share leadership responsibilities as co-captains.

LEOPARDS LOWDOWN
Wentworth has six matches under its belt this season – two in the fall and four in the spring. After going 0-2 in the 2018 portion of its slate, the Leopards fell in its first three matches in 2019 before taking down Penn State Berks, 6-3, March 7 to prep for its Thursday tilt with the Rams.

Tyler Hall has seen action as the ace this season posting a 1-5 record. Jarrett North and Dimitry Gosselin have each been successful in singles play, posting a 4-2 record collectively. Gosselin has a win on court six, while North has three wins in the second spot.  

In doubles play, the partnership of Tyler Hall and Tristan Maus have played three matches as the top tandem and bring in a 0-3 overall doubles record. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • The blue-and-gold slipped up versus Wentworth a year ago, 6-2, for the first time in the past nine seasons to move to 8-1 versus the Leopards in the Rams' record books, which date through the 2009 slate. 

LIONS LOOK
Emerson takes a 7-3 record into Friday's clash with the Rams. The Lions are coming off a 7-2 victory over UMass Boston on March 16.

Bass Lin and Maximo Lawlor have been lights out this season from the first and second singles spots posting identical 10-0 records.

In doubles play, the partnership of Dan Okin and Lin have played nine matches together at No. 1 and hold in a 9-0 overall doubles record. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Since 2009, Suffolk and Emerson have met 14 times with the Rams' leading the series, 11-3.
  • The blue-and-gold downed the Lions a year ago, 6-3.

CHARGERS CATCHUP
Colby Sawyer holds a 2-4 record heading into Saturday's match with the Rams. The Chargers have dropped three straight contests, including a 0-9 loss to Union College on March 10. 

Alex Wright has held down the top spot for the Chargers and comes into Saturday's matchup with a 2-4 singles record.  

In doubles action, the tandem of Erik Antonacci and Jack Cook has been the most successful as the junior and freshman boast a 5-3 record in the second position.

  • Suffolk and Colby Sawyer will meet for the first time.

Suffolk heads out on the road for the first time when it visits Albertus Magnus Tuesday, March 26 for a 3:30 p.m. tilt.
