Johnson & Wales Tops Suffolk 7-2

The Johnson & Wales University Wildcats defeated the Suffolk University Men's Tennis team by a 7-2 margin on Saturday morning in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Sophomore Calixto Romero (Peru) earned both wins for the Rams but the Wildcats took five of the six remaining singles matches along with a pair of doubles victories as they improve to a 6-2 mark and remain undefeated in GNAC play with a 4-0 record.
Four players for Johnson & Wales earned multiple wins on the day.
Freshman Jason Chavenson (Upper Dublin, Pa.) earned a win in the number three singles spot with consecutive 6-2 set victories. Earlier in the day he partnered with senior Drew Pontillo (Slingerlands, N.Y.) as the duo combined for an 8-5 victory in the second doubles match.
Pontillo was one of two Wildcats' players to earn victory by way of walkover. He and sophomore Mars Wala (Woonsocket, R.I.) took their singles matches, while freshman Tristan Edovas (Mystic, Conn.) won his match in the sixth singles game by forfeit after taking a 6-2 win in the first set.
Edovas and his doubles partner, freshman Adam Beady (Weymouth, Mass.) were 8-2 winners in the third singles match. Beady was a winner by default in the fourth singles game as he was ahead 4-2 in the second set after winning the first 6-3.
Romero defeated the Wildcats senior James Adriano (Pawcatuck, Conn.) in the number on singles game. Romero dropped the first set 6-4, before rallying with 6-2 and 6-3 wins for the match victory. Romero and junior Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) combined for an 8-4 win in the number one doubles contest over Adriano and Wala.
The loss sets Suffolk back to a 3-5 overall mark on the year, while they fall to 1-2 in GNAC play.
Both teams will be back in non-conference action later this week. Johnson & Wales hosts Clark on Tuesday at 3:30pm, while Suffolk will travel to Babson for a 3:30pm match on Wednesday afternoon.
