Second Stanza Sends NEC Over Men’s Hockey

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. – A three-goal second period for New England College proved to be the difference as Suffolk men's hockey never climbed out of the hole and fell to the Pilgrims, 7-1, Saturday night at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | New England College 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (1-5-0, 0-4-0 NEHC) | New England College (6-2-0, 5-1-0 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
New England College took advantage of its second power play of the day. Cal Wilcox made a diving save, to keep the visitors scoreless, but gave them a man-up opportunity in the process as the freshman netminder tripped a NEC skater on his layout save to get whistled for the penalty. Off the face-off, Wilcox faced an attempt from Channing Gorscak that he picked up, but it was Nikita Pintusov's put back that put the Pilgrims on the board at the 16:37 minute mark in the first frame.

The Rams responded on a power play of its own 4:32 into the middle period. Just 10 seconds after JP Chauvin was penalized for cross checking, Joe Feeney evened the score with help from Miller Rubin and Shawn Montgomery

Things got chippy pretty quickly and two minutes later the score changed again with the special teams on the ice. This time it was the short-handed team that struck as NEC used a quick transition into Suffolk's zone and a misdirection pass from Bernie MCGovern to David Good that caught Wilcox off guard to flip the score lead back in the Pilgrims' favor at the 7:13 minute mark.

Just over a minute later, NEC added to its advantage as Trevor Momot put away the first even strength strike of the day with a cross ice pass from Chauvin to make it a 3-1 score in the Pilgrim's favor at the 8:45 minute mark.

NEC's scoring continued less than four minutes later as Pintusov and Fornaris teamed up for the second time on the day to extend the Pilgrim's edge to three, 4-1, with 7:29 left in the second stanza.

Suffolk had its chance early on in the third frame as it went on a five-on-three for 1:18. The Pilgrims' defense backed up Anthony Pupplo though and kept the three-goal margin intact.

Halfway through the final period NEC added more distance as Jhuwon Davis tucked away an assist from Alex Laplante.

Good got his second goal of the season and outing at the 12:19 minute mark to keep the Pilgrim's scoring going and put the game out of reach for the hosts.

The final goal of the outing came with just under two minutes to play as Connor Inger found the back of the net on a feed from Chauvin.
