Hockey Returns to Win Column, Defeats SNHU 5-2

 

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. -  Freshman Tommy Bishop netted a goal and an assist to lead Suffolk hockey to a 5-2 non-league victory over Southern New Hampshire Wednesday evening at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.
 
After the two squads exchanged goals in the opening 1:19 of action, Bishop gave the host Rams (6-2-2) a 2-1 advantage after the opening 20 minutes of play with his third tally of the season. 
Sophomore Kyle Valliere evened matters for the visiting Penmen (3-7-1) just 1:48 into the middle stanza with a power play goal, but freshman Nick Mosher gave Suffolk the lead for good at the 9:24 mark of the second period with his first collegiate marker.  Freshman Brendan Heinze extended the hosts' edge to 4-2 with 1:58 remaining in the middle frame, and freshman Connor Parent's empty-netter with 3:17 to play in the contest iced the Rams' triumph.
 
Junior Brett Lawson accounted for Suffolk's first goal of the evening in the opening 79 seconds of action, as the Rams also received a pair of assists from freshman Justin Holliday  as well as single helpers off the sticks of senior Connor McCarthy and junior Justin Selep.  Sophomores Luke MillerAnthony Galloway and J.B. Sweeney also collected assists for the Rams, who killed off a major penalty early in the third period to preserve the victory.
 
Senior Jim Gabrione collected the opening goal just 18 seconds into the contest while adding an assist in the setback for Southern New Hampshire, which also received two assists from junior Jay Sylvia and a helper off the stick of freshman Michael Bears. 
Senior Brandon Smolarek  picked up the win in goal with 19 saves in the opening 56-plus minutes of play for Suffolk, which also received three stops over the final 3:17 of action from freshman Michael Levine in his first collegiate appearance.  Sophomore Ryan Slatky made 28 saves in the setback for the Penmen, as the Rams outshot Southern New Hampshire by a 33-24 margin for the contest.
 
Suffolk hosts Becker in an ECAC Northeast outing on Friday evening at O'Neil Rink that faces off at 7:40 p.m.
