Hockey Hits 10 Win Mark With 6-5 Victory on Thursday
Sophomores Justin Selep (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Danyil Medvedev (Boston, Mass.) combined for four goals and three assists for seven points as Suffolk held off a late charge to post a 6-5 non-league college men's ice hockey victory over Assumption Thursday evening at Steriti Rink.
Power play goals by Medvedev and Selep in that came 2:15 apart in the opening 10:43 of action staked the host Rams (10-5-1) to an early advantage, but the visiting Greyhounds (7-12) sliced that margin in half on junior Alex Erban's (Attleboro, Mass.) power play tally with 4:55 remaining in the first period.  Suffolk struck for three goals in a nine minute span in the middle stanza, as markers by junior Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis.) sandwiched a shorthanded goal by Selep and gave the hosts' a 5-1 cushion.  Assumption struck twice in the final 5:44 of the second period on tallies off the sticks of senior Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass.) and freshman Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass.), as the latter's power play goal with eight seconds left in the frame narrowed the visitors' deficit back to three, but Medvedev restored the Rams' three goal lead 4:15 into the final period.  The Greyhounds had a golden opportunity with a five-minute power play midway through the frame and pulled to within two on Plante's man-advantage marker with just under 12 minutes to play, and Laughlin's second goal of the night with the extra attacker sliced Assumption's deficit to one with 17 seconds remaining, but that would account for the final score.

Selep registered two assists to go with his goals in finishing with a four-point performance for Suffolk, which reached the double-digit plateau in victories for the first time since 2009-10 and for the third time in the last seven years.  Medvedev ended the evening with three points for the Rams, who also received a pair of assists from Cherpak and sophomore Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) as well as single helpers off the sticks of seniors Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.) and Andrew Ball (Brick, N.J.).  Laughlin (two goals and an assist) and Plante combined for five points in the setback for Assumption, which also received a goal and an assist from Erban as well as three helpers each from sophomore Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn.).  Senior Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H.) chipped in with an assist for the Greyhounds, who also received a helper off the stick of sophomore Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn.).
Junior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) picked up his ninth win of the season with a 16-save effort in goal for Suffolk, while junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn.) suffered the setback with 11 stops in relief of sophomore Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass.), who made 14 saves over the first 33-plus minutes of play for Assumption.  The Rams outshot the Greyhounds by a 31-21 margin for the contest and completed a regular-season two-game sweep.
Suffolk hosts Curry in an ECAC Northeast outing on Saturday evening at Steriti Rink that faces off at 7:00 p.m., while Assumption heads to Winchendon, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference clash that also faces off at 7:00 p.m.
