Gold Fever: Turner's Hat Trick Pushes Hockey to 7-2 Win
Sophomore Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) netted a hat trick as Suffolk continued its best start ever with a 7-2 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Becker Saturday evening at the Charlestown Rink.
Turner's second tally of the night snapped a 2-2 second period tie and sparked five unanswered goals by the host Rams (5-0-1, 4-0-1 ECAC Northeast), who have never previously started a campaign unbeaten in six contests.  Senior Tim Benedetto (Peabody, Mass.) scored late in the middle stanza to give Suffolk a 4-2 cushion heading into the final 20 minutes of play, as power play tallies by Turner and sophomore Sean Heelen (Walpole, Mass.) sandwiched senior Richard Woodworth's (Carlisle, Mass.) unassisted marker in the third period to account for the final score.
Junior Francis Musick (Laurel Springs, N.J.) gave the visiting Hawks (1-6, 0-5 ECAC Northeast) the early advantage by converting a 5-on-3 power play goal 8:02 into the contest, but Turner evened matters just 3:33 later with his first of the night that forged a 1-1 tie for Suffolk, which took a 2-1 edge 3:52 into the second period on a tally by sophomore Justin Selep (Pittsburgh, Pa.).  Junior Tyler Auricchio (Henderson, Nev.) evened matters for Becker less than three minutes later on a 4-on-4 conversion for the final tie of the contest, as Turner's eventual game-winning tally followed just 48 seconds later that set up the Rams' unanswered run over the final 22-plus minutes of play.
Junior Shaughn Shields (Anchorage, Ak.) collected three assists in the win for Suffolk, which also received helpers from seniors Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.), Andrew Ball (Brick, N.J.) and Creg Cook (South Lancaster, Mass.), junior Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.), sophomore Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis.) and freshmen Jack Jenkins (Billerica, Mass.) and Danyil Medvedev (Boston, Mass.).  Junior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) pic ked up his fifth win of the season with 16 saves in 51-plus minutes of action for the Rams, who also received three stops from senior Brett Roman (Rock Tavern, N.Y.).
Senior Justin Erhart (St. Paul, Minn.) registered assists on both goals in the setback for Becker, as junior Gregg Hussey (Medford, Mass.) made 25 saves over 51-plus minutes of action for the Hawks, who also received six stops from sophomore Tyler Stepke (Mars, Pa.).  Suffolk outshot Becker by a 38-21 margin for the contest, including a 28-11 advantage over the final two periods of play.
Suffolk heads to Hooksett, N.H. on Tuesday evening to take on Southern New Hampshire in a non-league outing that faces off at 7:30 p.m., while Becker travels to Medford, Mass. on Tuesday evening to square off with Tufts in a non-league clash that begins at 7:00 p.m.
