Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie With Salve

Freshman Mike Cherpak's (Enfield, Conn.) power play goal 53 seconds into the third period evened matters and lifted Suffolk to a 1-1 overtime draw with Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast ice hockey contest played Saturday afternoon at Steriti Rink.

Cherpak converted feeds from junior Jon Stauffer(Lansdale, Pa.) and sophomore Richard Woodworth(Carlisle, Mass.) on the equalizer for the host Rams (6-10-5, 3-4-3 ECAC Northeast) after the visiting Seahawks (7-11-2, 4-5-1 ECAC Northeast) grabbed their one-goal advantage with 2:28 remaining in the middle stanza when freshman Marc Biggs(Dallas, Tex.) converted a helper off the stick of sophomore John Scorcia(Tampa, Fla.).  Suffolk held a 12-8 edge in shots over the final 20 minutes of regulation, but Salve Regina notched three of the four shots in the extra session as the contest finished deadlocked.

Sophomore Brett Roman(Rock Tavern, N.Y.) stopped 33 of 34 shots in the draw for Suffolk, including 12 stops over the first two periods alone, while senior Mike McDonald(Whitby, Ont.) stopped 24 of 25 shots for Salve Regina, half of which came in the final 25 minutes of action.

Suffolk heads to Burrillville, R.I. on Wednesday evening to take on Nichols in an ECAC Northeast outing that faces off at 8:10 p.m., while Salve Regina hosts Curry in an ECAC Northeast clash on Wednesday evening in Portsmouth, R.I. that begins at 7:35 p.m.
