Baseball Tops Lasell 11-0 in GNAC Action

The Suffolk University Baseball team defeated Lasell College 11-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on a rainy Wednesday evening. Senior Josh Desai (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) combined to strike out 13 hitters in the shutout. Sophomore Sean Cameron (Milford, Conn.) drove in five runs to help lead the offense in the conference win.

Suffolk jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Jon Lapolla (Providence, R.I.) would lead the inning off drawing a base on balls before a base hit by sophomore Matt Brenner (Eliot, Me.). After a sacrifice bunt by junior Rob Marks (Revere, Mass.), junior Drew Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) would knock home the game's first run with a base hit to left. Cameron would later knock in his first run of the game with fielder's choice.

Suffolk would tack on four more runs in the third. Brenner would bring home Lapolla with a base hit after he drew a hit by pitch with two outs and later stole second. After another hit by pitch to Marks, and a walk to Carter, Cameron would clear the bases with a double in the left center gap.

Lapolla would drive in a run in the fourth with an RBI base hit before freshman Brady Chant (Warwick, R.I.) singled in a run with a hit in the fifth.

Cameron would drive in another run as part of a three run sixth inning while senior JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) added an RBI double.

Desai struck out nine hitters in five innings of work to collect his third win of the season.

Lasell would manage to load the bases in both the fourth and fifth innings. Desai would dodge bullets in both innings getting out of each jam unscathed. He would escape the fifth with a strikeout with the bases loaded.

Carroll struck out four in the final two innings of work throwing a pair of scoreless innings.

Suffolk would allow just five hits in the game.

Brenner was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored in the victor. Cameron was 2-for-4 while driving in the five runs. Lapolla reached base in all four of his plate appearances as he scored three times.

Both Suffolk and Lasell will complete the scheduled doubleheader on Thursday evening back at Brandeis beginning at 6:00pm. Game two was cancelled due to poor field conditions.
