Baseball Falls To Western New England 8-3

The Western New England Golden Bears defeated the Suffolk University Baseball team 8-3 on Tuesday evening at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough.

Senior Steve Buckey (Monroe, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with four RBI, while sophomore Daniel Morin (Salem, N.H.) added a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to help lead the Golden Bears offense.

Western New England jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning when junior Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) led the game off with a base hit up the middle. Junior T.J. Wyrebek (Bristol, Conn.) plated the game's first run with a double down the right field line sending Marciano home for the 1-0 lead.

Buckley would add a run in the third when he singled in Wyrebek who started the inning with a base hit.

Buckley would add some more offense in the fifth when he connected on his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left to build the lead up to 4-0. He would later drive in his fourth run of the game in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right as the Golden Bears managed to load the bases in the inning with nobody out.

Suffolk would plate two runs in the bottom half of the seventh as freshman pinch hitter Greg Speliotis (Salem, N.H.) knocked in a pair with a single to center with the bases loaded. Western New England would escape the jam as senior Jason Haddy (Oakland, N.J.) was summoned in from the bullpen ending the threat with a strikeout with the bases loaded.

Haddy pitched the final 2 1/3 innings striking out three batters, while allowing just one run, a solo shot to junior Drew Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) in the ninth to earn the save.

Junior Tom Mahoney (Granville, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound as he threw 4 2/3 innings of relief striking out five while allowing just two runs, none earned on three hits.

Morin's home run in the ninth was his second of the season, a three run blast to left.

The Golden Bears put together 13 hits in the victory. Five players finished with two hits in the game, including the first four hitters in the Western New England lineup. Marciano, Wyrebeck, Buckley, juniors Doug Milne (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Chris Casey (Milford, Mass.) all had a pair of hits in the win. Western New England moves to 3-8 on the year.
