Baseball Splits With Roger Williams on Friday

The Suffolk University Baseball team and Roger Williams University Hawks split a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Roger Williams took game one 6-2 behind a complete game four-hitter by junior Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn.). Senior Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) was a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener with an RBI while junior Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Junior Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) plated the day's first run in the home half of the first as his sacrifice fly gave Roger Williams a 1-0 lead.

Suffolk would answer in their next at bat in the top of the third when sophomore Matt Brenner (Eliot, Me.) hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate sophomore BJ Neil (Lynnfield, Mass.) to even things up.

Roger Williams would add four runs in the next at bat. After back to back walks to start the inning a bunt by freshman Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) would go unplayed for an infield hit. Sophomore Caulin Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) would knock in a run on fielder's choice that would bring in a second run on an errant throw. Cariglio would tack on some insurance with an RBI single later in the inning.

DeLeon would fan seven Suffolk hitters in seven innings to pick up his first victory of the season.

Sophomore Chuck Gibson (Malden, Mass.) would throw seven scoreless inning of relief for the game two victory as Suffolk outlasted the Hawks 3-2 in 12 innings.

Junior Drew Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) delivered the game winning hit, a bases loaded single in the 12th for the walk off win.

Roger Williams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second when freshman Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) knocked in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Freshman Jimmy Goober (Burlington, Mass.) would plate the second run of the inning as he knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.

Suffolk would get on the board in their next at bat as they were issued four base on balls in the inning as freshman Seth Coiley (Arlington, Mass.) brought in a run.

Freshman Brady Chant (Warwick, R.I.) would even the game when he doubled in sophomore Sean Cameron (Milford, Conn.) in the fourth.

Chant would lead off the seventh with a double down the left field line. After being moved up to third on a bunt, Suffolk would leave him stranded on third to end the inning and send it into extras.

Junior Rob Marks (Revere, Mass.) would lead off the twelfth with a base hit into left field, before senior JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) followed him up with another single through the left side. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners junior Jon Lapolla (Providence, R.I.)was intentionally walked to load up the bases. Carter laced the second pitch he saw of the at bat into left for the game winning hit.

Gibson allowed five hits over seven innings while striking out a pair to earn his first win of the season. Gibson relieved senior Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, Mass.) who went the first five innings. Tierney struck out four while allowing a pair of runs on three hits.

Both teams will wrap up their spring trips on Saturday. Roger Williams will take Bowdoin College. Suffolk will take on Fitchburg State at 12:30pm.
