Rams Rewind: April 26

BOSTON – Ram Nation now has the chance to get a glimpse into Suffolk Athletics history though clippings and pictures from the Rams’ record books and archives.

April 26 has proved to be a successful, highlighted filled day in Suffolk baseball history.

In 1947, the Rams won its first-ever baseball game. In its second-ever contest, Suffolk found its way in the win column and did so in shutout fashion as the then-Royals blanked Calvin, 11-0, at Cleveland Circle.

George Duffy earned the win on the hill with an eight-strikeout, three-walk effort through 6.0 innings before being relieved by Tom Cunniffe, who sat down six hitters. Ralph Cidlevicz propelled Suffolk’s offense with a 2-for-3 effort and three runs scored.

Sixty-two years later to the day, Suffolk baseball had more glory on April 26 as the Rams captured the 2009 GNAC Championship.

Suffolk outlasted the hosts Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in the final, winner take all game of the GNAC tourney, 15-6, to clinch its fourth league crown. The Monks pulled off a dramatic victory in the first game of the day erasing a 4-0 deficit to beat the blue-and-gold, 6-5, and force the extra title tilt.

Alex Torress tossed a complete-game, six-hit, seven-walk, two-strikeout game on the hill. Offensively, nearly every bat in the Rams’ order contributed with Paul Vittozzi (3-6) and Keith Carter (3-4) contributing three hits each. Carter brought in three runs along with Bobby Barrett, whoe went 2-for-5 at the dish.

Six years after that, the Rams captured the program’s fifth GNAC Championship in 2015, the first of what would be four under Anthony Del Prete. Once again, the crown was clinched in dramatic fashion as Suffolk earned the championship with a 4-3 walk-off win in 13 innings over Johnson & Wales.

Suffolk scored the game-winning run in the home half of the 13th when Drew Carter came around second and crossed home on an errant throw. Carter opened the frame with a double to the left center gap. After an intentional walk to Adam Johnson, Alec Constanza laid down a perfect bunt on the third base side. The throw to first would meet Constanza at the bag as it escaped with Carter rounding the third base bag and come in to win it.
