Keowen Sets Kills Record in Volleyball's 3-0 Loss at WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. – McKenna Keowen rewrote the Rams record books in Suffolk volleyball's 3-0 setback at WestConn Saturday afternoon as the junior captain became the program's all-time kills record.

HOW IT RECORD
Keowen entered the match with 722 kills, four shy of tying the current record, which is held by Suffolk's current assistant coach Hannah Fabiano.  

In the first frame, which Suffolk dropped 25-17, Keowen logged one kill.  

Down 10-4 in the second stanza, Scott Blanchard called a timeout to settle his team down. The huddle helped as the Rams scored five unanswered to pull within one. That stretch saw Keowen tie the all-time kills record to make it a 10-9 set.  

Suffolk to stay within striking distance of the Wolves and leveled the playing field 11 times before taking the lead 24-23. WestConn ended up rattling off three points in a row to seal the second set in its favor, 26-24.  

Keowen wasted no time in the third to break the read as she knocked a kill how to even things up at 1-all to make Suffolk's all-time kills record her own. From a 2-all time, the Wolves scored 10 straight to make things lopsided 12-2. The Rams attempt to mount a comeback, but were kept at a hefty distance the rest of the way.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Keowen finished the outing with six kills to go along with 10 digs, two blocks and one assist. 
  • Grace Cervenka contributed six kills, two blocks and one dig. 
  • Jessica Weber pitched in six kills and two digs. 
  • Aislinn Lanigan and Jayla Martinez set-up the offense with 16 assists and 10 assists, respectively. 
  • Morgan Kelsey registered 18 digs. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk met WestConn for the first time since 2009 and third time overall. 
  • Keowen became Suffolk's all-time kills leader with her 727th career kill.

Suffolk returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference competition and the friendly confines of Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court Tuesday, Oct. 3 to tangle with Curry at 7 p.m.
