Volleyball Aces Lesley, 3-0

BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball opened its home calendar in record-setting fashion as the Rams served 35 aces in just 53 minutes to take down Lesley in straight sets Monday night at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court. The 35 aces currently rank seventh in NCAA Division III this season and are the most in the Rams' match-by-match record book, which dates back to the 2011 campaign.

SET ONE RECAP (25-4, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk put the first six points on the board. In that stretch, Harmony Johnson served four aces. 
  • The Lynx got on the board after their own timeout, however, the Rams did not take their feet off the gas pedal and the host lead blossomed to 15-4.
  • Jayla Martinez took over the service line from there and put together six straight aces to make things lopsided, 21-4. 
  • The combination of Lesley errors, Martinez seventh ace of the set and a monster kill by Isabelle Huzar closed out the frame. 

SET TWO RECAP (25-8, SUFFOLK)

  • It was all Suffolk at the get go with the first nine points going to the blue-and-gold. Tatum Kalt was the main ingredient to that rally with seven aces to open the stanza. 
  • Lesley put its own spurt together with four points in a row to nearly trim things in half, 9-4. 
  • Slowly Suffolk continued to put distance between itself and the Lynx thanks to service action from Martinez and McKenna Keowen. Martinez added a pair of aces to her already career-high number and Keowen had three aces in a row to make it a 17-6 set. 
  • From there, Huzar took things over at the service line and Suffolk score eight straight. Huzar herself racked up four points all on the serve. 

SET THREE RECAP (25-3, SUFFOLK)

  • After trading points to begin the set, Suffolk broke a 2-all tie and served 20 consecutive points to go up 20 22-2.
  • Lesley managed to tack on one more point, however, a kill by Johnson followed by an by Martinez locked up the set and match.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Martinez paced the ace effort with nine of her own to go along with four handouts and two digs. 
  • Kalt registered seven aces and one dig. 
  • Kenzley Bell put together a six-ace, three-dig, one-assist stat line. 
  • Huzar logged four aces and four kills. 
  • Grace Cervenka tallied seven kills and one block. 
  • Aislinn Campbell recorded four kills and one block.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk's 35 aces are the seventh most by a Division III team in a three-set match in 2022. 
  • The 35 aces are the most in the Ram's match-by-match record book, which dates back through 2011 season.
  • Martinez nine aces are the most by a Ram since Talia Lombardo chipped in 14 to a 3-1 win over Newbury, Sept. 16, 2017. The nine aces by a single Suffolk player in a 3-set match is the most in the Rams' match-by-match record book that is through the 2011 season.
  • Suffolk and Lesley met for the first time since 2019. 
  • The Rams improved to 5-6 against the Lynx since 2007. 
  • Suffolk won back-to-back battles with Lesley. It is the first time since 2012-13 that the Rams won two straight matches against the Lynx. 
  • Six of the last seven matches between Suffolk and Lesley have been determined in straight sets. The Rams are 4-2 in those outings. 
  • Suffolk opened its home calendar with a win for the first time since the 2019 campaign when it swept Lesley. 
  • Suffolk remains unbeaten, 2-0, against Lesley under Scott Blanchard's guidance. 
  • Martinez (9), Kalt (7) and Huzar (4) all racked up personal-best in aces. 
  • Campbell logged the first kills and block of her collegiate career.
