Volleyball Stumped at No. 10 MIT in Straight Sets

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Suffolk fell to No. 10 MIT, 3-0, Tuesday night at the Rockwell Cage. The setback came by set scores 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19.

SET ONE RECAP (25-21, MIT)

  • MIT's early 5-2 advantage grew to a 10-6 lead at the midway point. 
  • Suffolk played catchup and pulled within one, 12-11. That stretch featured kills by Jess WeberAlina Nowakowski and McKenna Keowen with an ace from Morgan Kelsey
  • The Engineers scored four in a row to put a safe distance back, 16-11. 
  • Scott Blanchard used a timeout to calm his team down and the huddle helped as the Rams clawed back and leveled the playing field at 19-all. 
  • MIT used a timeout of its own to calm down and outscored the blue-and-gold 6-2 to secure the set.  

SET TWO RECAP (25-20, MIT)

  • In a back-and-forth battle, Suffolk trailed, 9-8. 
  • MIT scored six straight to put the Rams in a seven-point, 15-8, hole. 
  • The blue-and-gold attempted to battle back, but were kept at a distance the rest of the way.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-19, MIT)

  • Suffolk burst out to a 12-4 cushion. 
  • MIT fought back and outscored the Rams, 13-2, to take a 17-14 lead. 
  • Momentum proved to be in the Engineers favor and Suffolk never managed to comeback.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Weber led the attack with a 10-kill effort. 
  • Keowen had an all-around evening with eight kills, seven digs and one assist. 
  • Grace Cervenka and Nowakowski supplied four kills apiece. 
  • Kenzley Bell was a defensive force with 19 digs. 
  • Harmony Johnson registered 23 assists and seven digs.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk competed at MIT for the first time since 1999, second time overall.

Suffolk takes its talents to Mitchell Saturday, Sept. 10 for a trimatch with SUNY Cobleskill. The Rams will first take on the Fighting Tigers at 2 p.m. before battling the host Mariners at 4 p.m.
