Volleyball’s Season Ends in Straight Sets at Roger Williams in CCC Quarterfinals

BRISTOL, R.I. - Suffolk volleyball came out firing on all cylinders, but the early excitement slowly faded, and the second-seeded Hawks of Roger Williams capitalized to sweep the seventh-seeded Rams in the Quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament Tuesday night at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

THE BASICS

SCORE: Suffolk 0 | Roger Williams 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (11-17) | Roger Williams (10-10)

SET ONE RECAP (25-22, ROGER WILLIAMS)

  • Suffolk scored the first eight points of the night. That match-opening unanswered stretch featured killsfrom Jasmine James and Kenzley Bell and a pair of aces from Harmony Johnson
  • The Hawks huddled in a timeout early on, but that didn't help as the Rams hung to a hefty lead, 12-3, that
  • turned into a 20-13 cushion.
  • A Roger Williams rally came as it scored seven straight points to level the playing field at 20-all.
  • The blue-and-gold used both of its breaks to try and break up the scoring frenzy by RWU, but neither helped.
  • Out of Suffolk's second and last timeout the Hawks went up 21-20 after a ball handling error by Johnson.
  • The teams would trade points before the Hawks outscored the Rams, 4-1 the rest of the way to take the frame in comeback fashion.

SET TWO RECAP (25-9, ROGER WILLIAMS)

  • Roger Williams ran out to a 12-6 advantage.
  • The Hawks put together an 11-3 run to make things lopsided, 23-9.
  • Back-to-back points by RWU sealed the second set in the host's favor.

SET THREE RECAP (25-19, ROGER WILLIAMS)

  • Things stayed tight to get things going with a pair of tied scores.
  • From a 5-all frame, Roger Williams exchanged a 6-2 span that gave the hosts an 11-7 distance.
  • Suffolk clawed back and chipped the deficit down to one, 12-11. Gabby Elbrecht provided a kill and Johnson served an ace in that stretch.
  • The Hawks hung out in front, however, the Rams stayed within striking distance, 17-15.
  • Three points in a row by the host made things 20-15 and really sealed up the set and sweep.
