Regis Blocks Volleyball in Straight Sets

BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball opened a five-match homestand on the wrong side of a straight set decision to Regis Thursday night at the Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court. The setback came by scores 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17.

SET ONE RECAP (25-21, REGIS)

  • The teams traded a pair of points to start the match and lock things at 2-all. 
  • Regis ran ahead to a 10-4 lead, which forced Scott Blanchard to use a timeout early. 
  • The huddle did its job as Suffolk strung together six unanswered points to level the playing field at 10-all. The stretch featured back-to-back aces by McKenna Keowen and kills from Keowen, Harmony Johnson and Jasmine James and back-to-back aces.
  • Out of a Regis timeout, the Rams and Pride exchanged 5-1 runs to keep things even at 16-16.
  • After three ties, the Pride rattled off three points in a row to go up, 21-19, a lead Regis never let go of.  

SET TWO RECAP (25-19, REGIS)

  • It was true see-saw fashion to get things started with seven lead exchanges and 11 ties.
  • Suffolk chipped ahead 17-14 to force Regis into a timeout. 
  • The Pride powered back with a 12-2 stretch to come back and take the stanza.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-17, REGIS)

  • Regis jumped out to an 9-2 lead that quickly grew to 17-7 cushion. 
  • Each side jumbled their line-ups. The new faces on the court could neither give Suffolk a spark nor slow the Pride down and the visitors cruised to the set win.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Keowen registered 11 kills and two aces. 
  • Alina Nowakowski provided seven kills to Suffolk's 32-kill attack. 
  • Jayla Martinez and Harmony Johnson split time as the Rams' setter with 12 handouts and 10 assists, respectively. 
  • Kenzley Bell paced the defense with eight digs with Johnson and Martinez supplied five digs apiece. 
  • Martinez served two aces.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • The Suffolk, Regis series leveled at 8-8 all-time.

Suffolk has a full Saturday in store as the Rams entertain Gordon and Fitchburg State in a tri-match Oct. 23. The blue-and-gold meet the Fighting Scots in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at 11 a.m., before wrapping up the day at 3 p.m. versus the Falcons.
