Volleyball’s Season Closes in GNAC Quarterfinals at Simmons in Three

BOSTON – The seventh-seeded Suffolk volleyball team fell in straight sets to second-seeded Simmons in the GNAC Quarterfinals at Moore Gymnasium to conclude its 2017 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Simmons extended its win streak to 11 as the Sharks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match thanks to winning the first, 25-15, and taking the second, 25-17. The Rams were determined to force a fourth frame, taking the hosts the distance, but in the end Simmons came out on top, 29-27, to seal the sweep. 

SET ONE RECAP (25-15, SIMMONS)

  • Suffolk fell behind 9-5 to open the stanza.
  • From there, the Sharks rattled off seven straight points to gain a 18-9 advantage.
  • The distance was too large for the Rams to come back as Simmons cruised to the 25-15 set win. 

SET TWO RECAP (25-17, SIMMONS)

  • The score locked five times with the last coming at 11-all, before the Sharks gained a 12-11 edge.
  • Simmons would not relinquish the lead, as it turned an 18-14 advantage into a 25-17 second set victory. 

SET THREE RECAP (29-27, SIMMONS)

  • Suffolk was determined to make a comeback and jumped out to a 7-5 cushion.
  • After a tied 7-7 score and a lead change in the Sharks favor, the set would even up 15 times and the lead would flip flop seven before a 27-27 set stood.
  • The Sharks sealed the set and the match thanks to an attack error by Hannah Fabiano followed by a kill by Amber Peterson.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Simmons met in the GNAC Tournament, specifically the quarterfinals, for the second time and first time since 1999.
  • The Rams wrap up their season 13-16 overall with the 13 wins marking the most since 2013 and just the fourth time dating back to 1996 that the blue-and-gold won 13 or more matches.
