BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – In its second match of the week, the Suffolk women's volleyball team hung with Bridgewater State, but was unable to hold on for victory as the Bears took the match, 3-0, at the Tinsley Center. Bridgewater won the match in straight sets thanks to set scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-23.
Talia Lombardo played an all-around game for the Rams (1-2), as the first-year contributed six kills, three aces and 13 digs. Bridget Allison chipped in eight kills for Suffolk, while Liz Kerek handled the setting duties with 16 handouts. Defensively, Emma Feeney provided 16 digs, while Chindera Nwankwo and Jane Buckley turned in three and two blocks, respectively. Nwankwo also provided three kills on the offensive side of the net.
Hannah Maymon led Bridgewater (1-4) to its first victory of the season with a double-double effort. The junior outside hitter recorded a match-high 10 kills off a .310 hitting clip and 14 digs in the winning effort. Clara Goncalves added seven kills and seven digs and Cassidy Tyros paced the Bears' defensive force with 20 digs.
In all three sets the Rams had the opportunity to come away with the win, but were unable to score the final points. The stanza became more intense as the match went on, capped off by a two-point back-and-forth margin in the final frame.
For the second straight match, Suffolk held an advantage in aces, 6-3, while Bridgewater had the edge in kills, 32-25.
The Rams return to the court this weekend when it opens GNAC play. The University of St. Joseph will play host to Suffolk's first trimatch of the season where the Rams will also face Norwich.
