UMass Dartmouth Bests Women’s Tennis, 6-3

NORTH READING, Mass. – The Suffolk women's tennis team dropped a non-league match to UMass Dartmouth Thursday night as the Corsairs downed the Rams, 6-3, at North Reading High School.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Dartmouth took two of the three doubles courts to gain a 2-1 edge. Suffolk's second pair of Elena Cisneros Garcia and Kendall Smith was the only Rams' tandem to pick up a double win. The senior and freshman finished first with an 8-3 victory over Monika Reining and Melanie Wong to open the scoring. The Corsaris responded with wins on courts one and two to put the blue-and-gold in a 2-1 hole. 

After the Corsaris took singles court five as Reining downed Meagan French, 6-2, 6-0, Smith and Ilda Ascic leveled the playing field at 3-all. Smith bested Rachel Aftandilian, 6-4, 7-5, on court four, while Ascic bested Jaime Fastino, 6-4, 6-2 in the second spot to make it 3-3. 

Suffolk was unable to go ahead as UMD took control once again with a victory in the sixth slot. From there the Corsairs remained on cruise control and clinched the match on the first court and sealed the 6-3 decision with a victory at No. 3.

6 – Emma Sokolovsky (UMD) defeated Jordan Miller (Suffolk), 6-4, 6-0

DOUBLES

1 – Jenna Lahaie/Jaime Fastino (UMD) defeated Delaney Dunlap/Ilda Ascic (Suffolk), 8-4
2 – Elena Cisneros Garcia/Kendall Smith (Suffolk) defeated Monika Reining/Melanie Wong (UMD), 8-3
3 – Jordan Martin/Natasha Shiku (UMD) defeated Meagan French/Jordan Miller (Suffolk), 9-8 (7-2)

LOOKING AHEAD
Suffolk concludes home regular-season action Saturday, Oct. 6 against Johnson & Wales. Before the conference clash begins at 12 p.m., the Rams will celebrate their four graduating seniors; Emily Bean, Elena Cisneros Garcia, Delaney Dunlap and Meagan French.
