Women’s Soccer Duo Grabs GNAC Corvias Weekly Honors

BOSTON – After a stunning conference quarterfinals 2-1 victory at second-seeded Johnson & Wales Sunday night, Jennifer Martin and Kirsten Weiker of the seventh-seed Suffolk women's soccer team garnered GNAC Corvias weekly honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Martin took home player of the week, while Weiker picked up goaltender of the week recognition.

Martin, a junior from Higganum, Connecticut, scored on a free kick from 20 yards out with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation to break open a 1-1 tie and help the Rams upset the Wildcats.  Her game-winner made Suffolk just one of three of JWU's opponents this season to score multiple goals and Martin's second stanza tally is one of just four goals scored over the second set of 45 minutes against JWU in 2016. The thrilling effort came after a five-point regular season finale day at Mass. Maritime, where Martin found the back of the net twice and assisted one of the Rams' six goals.

In net Weiker was a crucial ingredient to Suffolk's upset over the Wildcats. The sophomore keeper put together a 10-save performance and was just one of five goalies that JWU faced in 21 contests this season that held the Wildcats to a single goal. Her quarterfinals performance followed an eight-save day in the regular season finale, a 6-2 win at Mass. Maritime.

The weekly awards are the second and third for Suffolk this season as Weiker earned the first nod Oct. 7.

The twosome and the Rams set their sights on the semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 2 as Suffolk travels to #3 Albertus Magnus for a 5 p.m. showdown.
