STANDISH, Maine – Jennifer Martin posted her fifth goal of the season, but it would not be enough as the Suffolk women's soccer team fell at Saint Joseph's of Maine, 2-1, Wednesday night at Westerlea Way Field.
The Monks outshot the Rams by a 24-8 margin. Kirsten Weiker earned her 13th start in net for Suffolk and made four saves.
Saint Joseph's (7-6, 4-2 GNAC) scored on back-to-back opportunities early in the match. In the 16th minute, Colleen Sheehan put the Monks on the scoreboard off a perfectly placed kick from the left about 20 yards out. The shot sailed into the top right of the net, beyond the reach of Weiker.
The second score came 10 minutes later. Sarah Comtois notched her first game-winning goal of her career on a scrum near the goalmouth after a corner kick. Whitney White sent the corner attempt into the heart of the box, finding Comtois who changed a header off the crossbar, settled the rebound and fought her way to the right post where she chopped a shot to the lower right corner.
Suffolk (3-10, 2-4 GNAC) surged in the second half, as Martin scored in the 49th minute. After the Weiker turned away Angela Valenti's attempt, the Rams drove down the field. Martin received a lead pass from Erika Nelson and streaked down the left side of the field before unleashing a laser from nearly the same location as Sheehan's strike in the first frame. SJC goalkeeper Brooke Troup appeared to have the angle, but Martin's shot found a narrow gap between the Monks' netminder and the left goal post.
The Rams had an opportunity in the 54th minute, as Martin sent another shot to Troup, but the keeper made the save to secure the victory for Saint Joseph's.
The Rams return to East Boston and the confines of James A. Sartori Stadium Saturday as they host Simons at 7 p.m.
